When we set our clocks back, adjusting to the new cadence of shorter days, it serves as a reminder that our lives move to the rhythm of time’s passing. Seasons shift, hours stretch or shrink, and the marks of time show up in everything around us. Our bodies age, the earth changes, and each moment that ticks away is a moment we’ll never regain. But there is One who stands unbound by time’s rule, One whose existence is not confined by hours, days, or years. God is beyond time. He does not grow old, nor does He tire. He does not evolve, for He has been complete and perfect from the beginning.
God is I AM. This name is no mere statement; it’s the declaration of God’s eternal nature, the profound truth that He exists without beginning or end. “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting, you are God” (Psalm 90:2). These words are a gentle reminder that God’s essence has never changed—and it never will. In a world filled with change, where nothing seems stable or sure, there is a deep comfort in the unchanging nature of God. He is the fixed point, the anchor who holds us steady when everything else shifts.
In our experience, change is inevitable. Even the most familiar routines of life can alter in a moment. We change jobs, move to new cities, gain friends, and, in painful times, lose loved ones. Change keeps us aware of how vulnerable we are and how much of life is beyond our control. Yet in this very vulnerability, we find the beauty of God’s eternal constancy. He is—unchanging, unaffected by the tides of history, the rise and fall of kingdoms, or the shifts of culture. There is no fear that God will ever become something He is not; His love, justice, mercy, and wisdom are as steadfast today as they were in ages past.
What does it mean for us, then, that God is beyond time? It means that when He makes promises, they are not subject to revision. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). His faithfulness endures, reaching across generations and cultures, unbroken by time’s grasp. We can trust His Word, for it is grounded in an eternal nature. If God has promised to never leave nor forsake us, that promise remains as true today as it was when He first spoke it. His faithfulness endures from age to age, across every imaginable stretch of time.
There’s a warmth in knowing that God’s understanding of us is not bound by our present moment. He sees our entire journey, from beginning to end, in one loving gaze. When we stumble or stray, He doesn’t grow impatient; He knows our hearts and the struggles we face. We are time-bound, often caught up in what we can see and touch. But God’s perspective is infinite. He sees where our lives fit into the grand, beautiful story He is telling, and He gently guides us along the way.
Consider the love we share with others, the moments that become memories as soon as they’re made. Those we love may come and go, and the connections we hold dear can fade or change with time. But God’s love for us does not wane. It is a love unmeasured by years or seasons, an unceasing, ever-constant love that holds us even when everything else feels uncertain. Imagine standing at the edge of the ocean, seeing the waves reach and recede, each one leaving a mark on the sand. The ocean stretches far beyond what we can see—just as God’s love stretches far beyond what we can imagine. It reaches us across eternity, unbroken and unyielding.
This truth brings a profound peace. Because God is unchanging, because He is timeless, we can rest in His promises. We can lean into His care, knowing that it will never expire, never fall short. He holds each one of us in His eternal embrace, and time, with all its constraints and limitations, has no power to diminish that love. God has always been our refuge and always will be, long after our days have passed.
In our fleeting moments, when we feel the pressure of time’s demands, let us pause and remember that we serve a God who is. He is our forever faithful Father, the One who stands outside of time yet is intimately present in each moment we face. May this truth bring us strength and comfort as we live in the now, assured that our eternal God will carry us through every changing season.
